History
Long Shore Laborers are hired by Seniority and approved by the Federal Government-The Department of Homeland Security U. S. Customs and Boarder Protection card (referred to as a TWIC card/ required) to work on all Ports. In addition to this card the Port of Miami also require a Port 10 Card, ILA Local #1416 Long Shore Laborers must have both ID cards. The International Longshoremen's Association Local #1416 has had only three Presidents since it was incorporated. Judge Henderson, Cleveland Turner and Clarence Pittman Jr. this non- profit organization have proven labor strength, progress, concern and dedication to the union members, their families, union retirees, non-union laborers and the community. They have two non-profit affiliates, ILA Ladies Auxiliary Number Eleven and ILA Retirees and Widowers Club; both organizations are beneficial to enhance the lives of members and their dependents. ILA Local #1416 building facilities such as water and electricity have been used for the refurbishing of the Lyric Theater, and the Mural on the eighth street sidewall, which is across the street from the Union Hall. The building has also been use to facilitate A. Philip Randolph Institute -(for members and neighborhood) Testing for HIV, High Blood Pressure -Smoking Cessation and year round Voting Registration. Since the International Longshoremen's Association Local #1416 work diligently and efficiently and understand that quick turnaround time is equally important to keep all vessels of the world sailing now and in the future; they have surpass other Ports, they are known as one of the most outstanding Port in the World and often referred to as the Cruise Capital.
